Northeast Ohio Chapter members Jeff Schiemann and Herb Werner were two of the four volunteer participants in a February 7 panel hosted by Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine to educate second-year medical students about interacting with people with disabilities.
Panel members shared their injury story, subsequent recovery process and personal insights and experiences with medical professionals.
In the question-and-answer session that followed, panelists answered more specific questions covering personal feelings, impacts and opportunities for improvement of medical experiences.
βIt was very encouraging that not only was this topic presented at the request of the medical students seeking greater understanding of the issue, but also that the medical school faculty sponsored the session and fostered awareness and understanding of the need in SCI and all [disability] communities for appropriate medical services and support,β says Werner.
