William J. Fertig - Resource Center Manager

Bill Fertig joined the NSCIA staff as a Resource Center Associate in July of 2005 and was promoted to Resource Center Manager in October of the same year. The experience he brings to the Resource Center includes twenty-five years as a municipal police officer. He served the last five of those years as a patrol and training Sergeant. An off duty motorcycle accident, resulting in T-7 paraplegia, ended his active police career but has led to new avenues of public service.

One year after his accident, Bill continued his career in public service as a 911 emergency dispatcher.

At this same point, he began volunteering as a peer support counselor at his former rehabilitation center, Healthsouth, Harmarville.near Pittsburgh. This combined experience allows Bill to relate well to those who contact the Resource Center for assistance or information.

Bill has always been active in recreational sports that involve a high level of intensity. He was involved extensively with amateur wrestling, first as a youth coach then as a referee.

Since his rehabilitation he has continued this sports intensity enjoying swimming, deep-sea fishing and parasailing. He now pursues adapted versions of his favorite sports, water skiing and hand cycling.

Bill lives with his wife in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . They have three adult children and one grandson.
