Emerging Leader (Special Award Separate from the SCI Hall of Fame) – Nominees for this award should exhibit exceptional leadership qualities in a local or regional capacity toward the improvement of opportunities or quality of life for persons living with SCI that may include, but are not limited to, managing others, leading by example, mentoring, transferring knowledge, taking a risk to achieve a desired outcome, delegating tasks in a clear and logical manner, motivating others to strive beyond what they believe can be accomplished, and growing their effort or organization in both size and scope.
David Apple
More than three decades ago, Dr. David Apple left a promising career as an orthopedic surgeon to pursue an opportunity that had little promise of financial security. At 33 years old, with three children and one on the way, he became the first employee of what started as a 6-bed unit at a community hospital designed to serve people with spinal cord injuries.

Donald Peck Leslie, M.D., is a driving force at Shepherd Center, a catastrophic care hospital, specializing in the treatment of people with spinal cord and brain injuries, MS and other neurological diseases and illnesses.
