Actor with SCI, Mitch Longley, Releases Album
Proceeds to Benefit Stem Cell Research
Actor Mitch Longley, regularly seen on NBC's "Las Vegas," returned to his singing roots by creating a CD entitled Songs for the Cell to celebrate and increase public education of stem cell research. Mitch has used a wheelchair since his spinal cord injury in 1983. Songs for the Cell was recorded in June of 2007 at White House Productions in Shelton, CT. On the album, Mitch covers songs by some of his favorite artists such as Paul Simon, Bill Withers and Neil Diamond, plus standards like "Wish Upon a Star" and "Over the Rainbow." He chose songs with lyrics that best express his experience of injury, recovery, healing and hope for the future.
2009 College Scholarships for Students with Parents with Disabilities
Through the Looking Glass and its National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families are pleased to announce new scholarships specifically for high school seniors and college students who have parents with disabilities. These scholarships are part of Through the Looking Glass' new federal grant (New National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families). All application materials must be completed and postmarked by Monday March 16, 2009.
Research Study May Offer New Option For Overactive Bladder in People with Spinal Cord Injury
A Medical Research Study Is Now Underway to Determine if an Investigational Medication is Safe and Effective for Reducing the Frequency of Urinary Incontinent Episodes in People with SCI and MS
For people with spinal cord injury (SCI), living with incontinence resulting from overactive bladder (OAB) is a difficult condition that inhibits daily activity and requires extra care and maintenance in one's daily routine. To cope with this problem, many people choose to stay at home to be near the bathroom, drink less liquids, or carry an extra set of clothes with them in case of an accident. Others, if they do leave the house, only go where they can quickly access a restroom or take shorter trips. Even daily activities, such as commuting to one's job, can present difficulties.
Social Security to be First Government Agency to Use Nationwide Health Information Network
The Social Security Administration announced today that it will be the first government agency to utilize the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN). Beginning in early 2009, Social Security will receive medical records for some disability applicants electronically through the NHIN gateway.
RHI Awarded Two Grants in First-Ever Funding from Indiana Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Board
Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana announced today that two of its ongoing lines of brain injury research have been awarded a total of $240,000 from the new Indiana Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Board.
NEW NATIONAL CENTER FOR PARENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Research and resources concerning the 9 million U.S. parents with disabilities
A new National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families has been established in Berkeley, California under the auspices of Through the Looking Glass, a non-profit organization founded in 1982. The Center will oversee several national research studies concerning parents with disabilities and their families, as well as provide consultations, trainings and publications to parents, family members and professionals.

George Flores Fights to Live and Make a Living
On September 11, 2004, at around 11:00 p.m., George Flores was returning home from watching friends perform at a concert. His motorcycle ran off an Illinois highway, plunged 50 feet down into a remote wooded area and landed in wetland grass four feet deep. No one saw the accident, so no one called 911. Flores was unconscious and alone.
