Marine Corps Marathon a Success for Team NSCIA Members

Team NSCIA members Andy Hicks and Bill Fertig both successfully completed the 2008 Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday, October 26 to raise funds to help the National Spinal Cord Injury Association (NSCIA) continue to fulfill our mission of enabling people with spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D) to achieve their highest level of independence, health, and personal fulfillment by providing resources, services, and peer support.

This was the first marathon event for Fertig, who competed in the handcycle division.

"It was my first marathon and it will not be my last," says Fertig. "Aside from the physical benefits of handcycle training, it was a huge honor to participate in the Marine Corps Marathon - the ‘People's Marathon'." He goes on, "As I lined up at the start of the Marine Corps Marathon beside many recently wounded solders, I was humbled to be in their presence and honored to compete along side of them!"

Hicks, who is on the NSCIA board of directors, has competed in various marathons in the past, but this was his first time doing so in support of NSCIA.

In addition to the physical challenge, both Fertig and Hicks used the opportunity to raise funds for NSCIA and have worked with the association to launch Team NSCIA - an online fundraising program to support their efforts that creates an opportunity for other individuals to raise funds for NSCIA now and in the future.

Fertig explains, "From the staff of MCM to the thousands of Marines, law enforcement personnel and volunteers, the MCM is a terrifically managed and must-do experience."
