Here’s something that may infuriate wheelchair using New Yorkers, state government has been caught with its hand in the cookie jar–swiping up dollars earmarked for spinal cord injury research and potentially a cure.
Where’s the money going? Into a “general” spending fund to be used however the state wants. We can thank former New York Governor David Paterson for this double dealing. He began raiding the cash for SCI research in 2010 and it hasn’t stopped since. The real loser is New York’s SCI community. Funding promised for finding a cure should be used exactly for that, not pillaged by state government. The New York State Spinal Cord Injury Research Program was created in 1994 to raise money specifically for SCI research and it has raised tens of millions. This research funding is collected through an additional levy on moving violations in New York State.
